This course is an introduction to the science and psychology of spirituality and is the starting point to becoming an accredited spiritual wellbeing practitioner with the Centre for Spirituality, Ecology & Mental Health. The challenges of the current mental health, ecological, financial and political crises, are underpinned by a spiritual crisis taking place in our world today. The importance of spiritual themes in our identity and worldview are becoming increasingly recognised as key to building healthy relationships with ourselves and others and healthy development both personally and collectively. This course explores the wealth of research in the physical and social sciences across fields such as psychology, social work, nursing, holistic health, coaching, counselling and social justice. As a modular course it offers flexible study and flexible payment with total control over how far you wish to progress.

The course will appeal to anyone who is interested in the subject of Spirituality and is designed to underpin professional practice in a variety of helping relationships such as coaching, counselling, nursing, teaching, holistic health and social work, or equally, support an interest in self-development. Do I need any prior knowledge of spiritual theory?

A big no, the course provides an introduction to the theory and encourages you to explore the concepts by applying them in your life and relationships with a spiritually sensitive approach.

What will I learn?

The course provides –

  • An overview of Spiritualty, from theory and application
  • A scientific and subjective exploration of topics such as defining spirituality, spirituality vs religion, variety of spiritual experiences, consciousness, self-transcendence, mysticism, materialism vs idealism, quantum theory, systems theory, living universe theory, archetypes, psyche and synchronicity
  • A shared language and a spiritually sensitive approach, in order for you to explore and communicate ideas that are often difficult to put into words and may be deeply personal.
  • A variety of activities to help you explore theory from your own perspective and integrate learning from scientific studies. Activities are designed to help you reflect on your own spiritual identity / worldview and how it impacts your life and the life of others, as such, activities use you as the subject of your understanding and application and therefore encourages the development of your own evidence-based perspective.

How is the course delivered? 

To fully complete the course, there are eight separate online modules to explore at your own pace. Across these modules, you will have access to editable journals, activities, videos, articles, live online discussion, and online support from your module facilitators.

Is there an exam?

There is no exam. There is an end-of-course assignment if you wish to attain a certificate and ultimately progress onto the next stage of becoming a spiritual wellbeing practitioner. The assignment involves undertaking a practice of your
